Cattle panel trellis’s have caught on in popularity recently and rightfully so! We love using these in our garden and you guys have shown plenty of interest in creating your own so I wanted you to have this quick guide to making and using a cattle panel trellis in your garden space!

Cattle Panel Trellis DIY

It is super easy to create your own cattle panel (also known as cow panel or livestock panel) trellis. All you need is the cattle panel, a few t-posts or another type of stake that is strong enough to hold the panel, and some type of fastener to connect the panel to the post. Other items that may make the job easier would be a sledgehammer or t-post driver to drive the posts or stakes into the ground as well as t-post clips to attach the cattle panel to the t-posts, oh and a little bit of muscle to bend the cattle panel.

Once you have all of your supplies you will need to decide on the location. Keep in mind what you will be growing on your trellis and where that needs to be located in your garden. Be sure that your crop won’t shade out any other plants once it is fully grown and that the whole trellis will have good sun exposure. Usually you can achieve this by having the openings face north and south but just do the best you can!

Where to Buy Cattle Panel

Cattle panel can usually be purchased at your local garden or farm store such as Lowes, Home Depot or Tractor Supply. You may even be able to find these used on your local buy and sale page such as Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. The price also will vary so be sure to shop around for the best price if you have multiple options for buying your cattle panel.

Keep in mind that the panels are 16 feet long and very sturdy so they don’t bend easily. You will need 2 people to pick these up and maybe bungee cord to tie them down with. Once you have navigated getting the panel home you are well on your way to creating your own cattle panel trellis!

Cattle Panel Trellis Ideas

The cattle panel trellis has so many uses from creating a beautiful arch to grow roses on to trellising large squash or melon! The possibilities are endless. These trellis’s are especially helpful when you have limited space as growing vertically allows you to grow more crops in less space. For example some people use a cattle panel trellis to connect two garden beds. You can plant a vining plant at the base of the trellis and still have the rest of the bed available to grow other crops.

Many people use these trellis’s to define an area in the garden as they create an eye-catching display when the trellis is covered with a plant. For example at the entrance to your garden space you can create an archway with the trellis and grow a vining flower that is native to your area. This will make the space attractive to the eye and a joy to be in!
