Hey Friends Happy February!

Happy almost spring time on the homestead there is so much we have been doing that we want to share all of our homestead winter tasks. First off we had a few baby donkeys that joined us when we were trimming back all of our fruit trees and bushes along the property. Now is the time to trim back for ultimate tree growth. Also we set up a new trellis we can not wait to share with you! We have big plans for our walkway to our house and we are going to take you for each step of the journey.

Why should you prune your fruit trees?

In the fall, fruit trees draw the energy out of their lush green leaves and into their root systems for winter storage. Once the energy has been sucked out of the leaves, those leaves will turn brown and fall off the tree. Fruit trees hardly grow at all during the winter months (their roots continue to grow, but that’s about it).

Winter pruning encourages vigorous growth: Moreover, when you prune your tree in the late winter or early spring, you will spur vigorous growth. Why? Well, because you are selecting the best branches to keep, while removing the lower quality branches. This means that when the spring comes, the tree won’t waste its energy fueling the growth of poor quality branches. Instead, it will focus that energy on the best branches. 

Here is our beautiful new trellis we just set up and can not wait to share!! This walkway is going to be stunning in a few months. We are doing a concrete hedge layer in between the grass and walkway with beautiful flowers on each side. On the trellis we have decided to plant a pink lady banks rose.
