After years of sitting on a waiting list, we finally brought home our first mini donkey, June. We named her after legendary country singer, June Carter, and we couldn’t be more in love. This is truly where our mini donkey breeding dreams will begin. To welcome June to the homestead, we are going to give you some awesome mini donkey facts!
Are mini donkeys friendly?
Mini donkeys are probably one of the most friendly of all of the farm animals. You can essentially consider them as big dogs with hooves! Mini donkeys do great in droves or herds, and love frolicking around with other mini donkeys big and small.
Don’t be surprised at all if your mini donkey also makes friends with all of the other animals around your farm. Mini donkeys are known to get along well with chickens, turkeys, horses, mini horses, goats, sheep, and dogs! They have also been known to protect smaller livestock from any predators that may get past your fence. From our experience, mini donkeys are fiercely loving animals.
If you are the owner of a mini donkey, you should plan to visit your mini donkey daily. They become seriously attached to their owners, and need regular interaction in order to live a happy life. It would not be wise to leave a mini donkey isolated, as they could become sick or just extremely sad. Making sure that you not only visit them regularly but also groom them and ensure that they have fresh, clean water are vital to your mini donkey’s overall well-being.
Facts About Mini Donkeys
Each and every farm animal has different needs, and different personality traits. What I love about mini donkeys is that they are so diverse, and full of life! Here are a few things that you may not know about mini donkeys:
They have their own individual “bray”, or voice. They can recognize each others calls this way!
Mini donkeys are very smart and trainable.
Most mini donkeys love attention and getting pet, and will rub up against you for more love!
Mini Donkeys can live up to 30 years- so get ready for a life long friend!
There are so many reasons to love mini donkeys, and these are only a few. Stay tuned to our journey as we add more mini donkeys to our farm and start the process of becoming mini donkey breeders! We can’t wait to see how this unfolds.
How to make a Flower Crown for your Mini Donkey
One of the things we couldn’t wait to do when we finally brought our beautiful mini donkey home was making a flower crown for her. It was super easy to make, low budget, and came out cuter than I could have imagined.
Step #1: Wrap some thick wire into the size and shape you need for your mini donkey’s head
Step #2: Cut your flower stems to about 3”
Step #3: Get some thinner wire, and use it to wrap the flowers into the headband
Step #4: When you have the flowers in place, use a hot glue gun to secure them
The best part is the goats enjoyed a treat of some flowers after I took some pictures! I hope you all enjoy these pictures I can’t wait for all to come from Frankie & June on the homestead!
Hugs,
Christina & Trevor
