Hi, everybody. Today we are writing about how we are building our deer-proof fencing. We have had so many questions about it we wanted to dedicate a blog post about it. We will explain why we made the choices we made, and answer some of the questions you have asked.
Attractive Deer-Proof Fencing Ideas
Building an attractive deer-proof fence is a priority for us. So we came up with 4×4 hog panels 5 feet tall with 2×4 and 2×6 framing it in. 36 inches above that, putting a top rail for something to vine on. We are hoping it is not a bad idea to leave a gap at the top of our deer-proof fencing. But, if we find the deer can jump through that, the contingency plan would be to run a cable in the middle and vine something on that, too.
Our deer proof fencing plans are very labor-intensive, but that’s the price you pay if you want attractive deer-proof fencing that’s sturdy and built to last. The 4×4 hog panel still lets you see the garden and is strong enough to keep the deer out. It is also perfect for vining plants!
Our design shows that you do not have to sacrifice security for beauty. Your own attractive deer-proof fencing ideas may differ from ours depending on your garden layout. If you want to ensure that your deer-proof fencing is both attractive and effective, it will take some planning because you want to integrate it into your property design.
Deer Proof Fencing Designs
There are a lot of different deer proof fencing design ideas to choose from. It all depends on your needs and your garden. For us, the panel fencing was the best fit. We were asked if our deer-proof fencing was also rabbit-proof fencing, but in our area rabbits aren’t really a problem. The only thing we may have is squirrels and they can climb whatever kind of fence you use.
If you are having issues with smaller rodents and would still like to use our deer-proof fencing design, the gap at the bottom of the panels may be an issue for you. Making deer proof fencing panels work for you may require landscaping to fill that gap like an attractive stone trim.
Deer Proof Fencing Cost
Deer proof fencing can be costly depending on your design. We have taken years to design our custom garden set up because we do everything debt-free, so we have saved for a few years. It cost us more than we care to admit for our deer-proof fencing since materials at this time are so high. A lot of different factors are going to affect the final price. You can use our design as a template to create something more affordable. You may also be able to find cheaper materials in your neck of the woods!
Finding materials at a good price will help a lot. Finding a deal at a local lumber yard might save some money over a big box store. Also doing the work yourself will help cut costs. Whichever deer-proof fencing idea you go with though setting posts can be a tricky part, lucky for you we have a quick YouTube short that can help.
Have you built any deer-proof fencing on your land using our recommendations? Do you have tips of your own? We would love to see, friends!
Hugs,
Christina & Trevor
