I worked with the owners of @haldengarden to find the most beautiful dahlias for our Thermaland Oaks Dahlias Collection. I am so excited to share them with you.The dahlias in my collection are from Holland. I hope you will enjoy the dahlia collection as much as I do.
This set includes six dahlia tubers, all lovingly chosen for you all:
Belle of Bamera
Fleurel
Cafe Au Lait
Vancouver
Sunny Pastel
Passionate Lover
*Tubers will ship in March when they will not be harmed by extreme temperatures in transit.
Your tubers can go directly into the ground in the spring when the ground has warmed and there is little chance of frost If you are like me and want blooms as early as possible, you can start the tubers indoors in good light about a month before planting time. You will then have a small plant ready at planting time, sounds perfect right? Dahlias can be planted as late as mid-June in most parts of the country.
Where to plant
Dahlias require a site with good drainage and partial to full sun. Pots are also increasingly popular way to grow dahlias. Last year I experimented with pots so I can move the dahlias around in different lights and I could see how they do in the extreme temperatures of our Northern, CA zone 9 region. I did find out they love sun but on days over 100 degrees they needed to be moved to a shady spot. I am going to plant my dahlia cut flower garden under our oak trees this year which will give the dahlias a chance to get shaded when we have a heat spell. Make sure well drained soil and water lots on hot days in my tips!
How to plant
Put the tuber in a hole several inches deep with the “eye” on the tuber facing up. The eye is the point of the tuber from which the plant grows. The root system down in the dirt. Cover with a few inches of soil
If you are planting a number of dahlias in the same location, they should be separated by about 2 feet to give each plant room to grow. I love to mix my dahlias so not the same variety is grown next to each other. A colorful cut flower garden when they all bloom!
