If you’ve been following my recipes, you know that I love garden fresh ingredients and making things from scratch, and this pizza dough recipe is no different! We all love ordering pizza, but I prefer to ditch the grease and make our own healthier pizza at home when we get the chance. I’m going to tell you what I know about pizza dough, and give you all of the tips and tricks for making my favorite homemade pizza dough recipe!
What flour is best for pizza dough?
What kind of flour you use in your pizza dough recipe will depend on what kind of crust you want! There are so many options like thin crust, pan crust, vegan crust, or gluten-free. The different types of flour will change how the dough forms while it’s being baked.
For a really crispy crust, you would want to use all-purpose flour in your pizza dough recipe. This crust may be a little bit chewy, but it will definitely give you that crunch you are looking for. If instead, you want a dense, stretchy, bread-like crust, use bread dough. This crust will be soft and fluffy. The best all-around flour to use in a pizza dough recipe would be 00 flour. This is the traditional Italian flour used for pizza, and it’s known for being very finely ground. This flour is not gluten-free, but it is going to give you that traditional pizza crust taste, with the perfect texture for pizza. It’s amazing how one ingredient changed can change the whole outcome of the pizza!
For our pizza dough recipe, we are using gluten-free all-purpose flour. This will produce the same crust results as regular flour, but will leave out the gluten! Another great gluten-free flour option for your pizza dough recipe is almond flour. Almond flour will give you a thin, crispy crust with a cracker-like texture, which may be perfect for you!
What is basic pizza dough made of?
This easy homemade pizza dough recipe only needs 5 ingredients, can you believe it? With just 5 simple baking ingredients including sugar, flour, yeast, salt, and olive oil, you can make pizza dough right in your own kitchen. The ingredients together form a dough and when baked, the yeast is activated and the dough rises into a crust!
As long as you have your pizza dough recipe locked down, what will make the pizza good is the sauce and toppings. I don’t only make the pizza dough from scratch, I make my famous homemade marinara sauce as well! I try my best to use fresh ingredients, and make most of the components of the meal from scratch! I get the ingredients for the sauce straight from my garden, and most of the toppings as well!
To top our homemade pizza dough recipe and homemade marinara sauce, what better than fresh toppings from the garden as well? For toppings, we will sometimes choose tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, or jalapenos. It’s so great to have such a wide variety right outside of our kitchen.
Easy Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe
Now for the best part, the famous pizza dough recipe. We have two young kids and making meals from scratch can sound like a lot of work, but this recipe is different! You can have this pizza dough recipe prepared and in the oven in about 30 minutes, and there is no rising required!
If you did want to make the dough in advance you absolutely can and there’s a few different ways you can do this. The first would be to roll the dough into a ball and freeze in an airtight container or plastic wrap. You could also form the crust, bake it for 5 minutes, let it cool, and wrap in plastic to freeze. The meal-prep friend option would be to prepare the entire pizza, flash freeze it, and wrap it in plastic. It can be stored in the freezer for up to two months!
Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe
Prepared in about 30 minutes, this pizza dough recipe is easy and delicious!
Ingredients
1 cup warm water
1 tbs Sugar
1 tbs Active Dry Yeast
1 tbs Olive Oil
2.5 Cups Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
1 tsp Salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Grease a pizza pan or large jelly roll pan and set aside
Put warm water into a large mixing bowl. (Around 105 F)
Add sugar and yeast and stir to combine.
Let mixture sit for 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbles form.
Add olive oil and gently stir to combine.
Add 2 cups of flour and salt and mix with a spatula until a ball begins to form (dough will still be slightly sticky). Add more flour as needed to form a dough ball.
Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a smooth dough, adding up to ½ cup extra flour if needed.
Roll dough into your desired shape and gently transfer to your prepared pan. (Or bake on a pizza stone, see instructions in the notes).
To ensure the dough doesn't form air pockets, use a fork to prick to the dough all around (gently so you do not poke holes all the way through the crust).
Bake on the lower rack of your preheated oven for 5 minutes and remove from your oven. (this is just to very slightly prebake the dough). If you notice air bubbles forming, poke them with a fork to let the air out.
Add pizza sauce and toppings of choice!
Bake on the lower rack of your oven for around 15-20 minutes until the crust looks crispy and lightly browned.
Let cool, cut and serve.
