My cut flower garden that we wrote about earlier is beautifully blooming and I now want to show it off! Today I want to talk about my cut flower garden, the dinner plate dahlias we are growing, and where to find your own Van Zyverden flowers.
Cut Flower Garden
A cut flower garden is an easy way to beautify any space. They bring a colorful splash to the yard and you can bring them into the house to brighten any room. Cut flowers can also make an excellent addition to your roadside stands or local farmer’s market. So not only can they make your homestead more attractive, they are also very practical.
I don’t know if I would recommend that you should eat your flowers, but I can assure you that deer will want to eat from your cut flower garden! So, if that is going to be an issue for you, you may need to take precautions. Our chickens have not gotten to our cut flowers yet and they grow next to their coop so we can see that they would like to. Fresh cut flower garden tip #1, protect your garden.
I have a few more tips for your cut flower garden to share with you. Tip #2 – constant water. We did irrigation on spray for 30 minutes a day. Tip #3, the dahlias can be staked – so if they start to fall don’t give up on them. Tip #4 is to soften up the ground, we used a trencher. The last tip Tip #5, cover the beds in mulch to help with temp and water retention.
Dinner Plate Dahlias
The star of our cut flower garden is the dinner plate dahlia from Van Zyverden. We have a wide variety of flowers with every color and hue represented. There is just something special about this giant flower that can grow up to 11 inches and up to 4 feet tall. I love the way the sunburst gradient shows all the different colors on the same cut flower.
We just arranged some bouquets from our garden to bring inside. I would recommend cutting your flowers in the morning while their water retention is at its highest. Then you should remove any foliage that will be below the water line in your vase. Our flowers are coming in staggered, so as we collect from these blossoms new ones are on the way. It is so wonderful to have the scent of fresh-cut flowers in the house all summer long.
Van Zyverden from Walmart
We got our dinner plate dahlias from Walmart. Van Zyverden has a variety of bulbs available online. Let’s be honest though, who goes to their local Walmart without walking through the garden center?! While you are there, grab your own bulbs and get your garden started!
I made a video of our cut flower garden set up check that out here. We have more than just the dahlias that we would love to show off. If you have your own cut flower garden growing, share some pictures in the comments or tag me in your garden posts on Instagram. I would love to see you, friends!
For our cut flower garden, we used the following plants, ALL from Van Zyverden!
