Tips to Keep Homesteading Animals Cool in Summer Heat because it is hot outside! This summer has been nothing short of a warm one especially since I am pregnant. That is why I am taking steps all over the homestead to help all my animals keep cool!
Sudden changes in temperature can be really hard on outdoor homesteading animals. I have had my own fair share of sudden changes of health in animals. I have lost chickens and had sick goats after a spike in temperature. Here at Thermaland Oaks Homestead we have chickens, goats, sheep, donkey, and dogs. Enough to keep us busy all year round, but we love it that way!
Over my last few years homesteading I have learned some tips I want to share with you.
Keeping Homesteading Animals Cool in Summer Heat:
Tip 1
Freeze scraps of garden fruits & vegetables in containers to make ice blocks. These frozen treat ice blocks you can put out for your chickens in the heat of the day. I put on top of a cookie tray and in the shade under a tree usually. When the ice starts melting the chickens peck at the ice and they get hydration as well as chunks of treats that are cold for them. This will last for a while outside and all of my chickens love it! They will sit there for hours.

Tip 2
Fresh and cold water. We have automatic water dispensers that fill up with par levels. When it is a very hot day I will dump out the water troughs and let the trough fill back up with cool water. Even putting in ice will help with keeping your animals cool.
These are some of the items I use for the animals to keep them cool.

Tip 3
Use misters outside any pens or coops with animals and try to have adequate share from trees or house pens around. Having dirt in the pen is also a great idea you can use sprinklers to keep the dirt moist and they can keep cool by digging.

Tip 4
Water! This one is a big one anywhere you can cool your large animals off with and let them swim is very helpful in the heat of the summer. This is a natural pond on our homestead that is perfect for letting our dogs swim in. This is Archer, our sweet Great Pyrenees who is cooling off below.
The animals on our homestead are very precious to us and we want to make sure we take care of them in the heat of the summer. I hope you use some of these tips and if you have any others people let me know and comment!

Christina
