If you’ve been wondering what type of pet Great Pyrenees make, we are the perfect people to tell you. We absolutely love our boy, Archer, who is actually a Great Pyrenees mix. We know you’re wondering about the shedding, so we will tell you all about that, their size, their personalities, and why they make amazing pets.
Great Pyrenees Size
The Great Pyrenees are considered a large dog breed because they grow to be more than 50lbs. Female Great Pyrenees can grow to 110lbs and males can get as big as 160lbs. That’s a lot of dog, and even more hair. These dogs will be able to stand right up and dance with you, and they look really pretty doing it! Although they are large, they are pretty gentle dogs which is exactly what you’re looking for in a livestock guardian.
His hair makes up most of his size when he’s dry, but once he’s wet you can make out his lean, muscular body. Our boy spends a lot of time in the water, but when he is dry and fluffy, is a big cuddly bear! He is also surprisingly athletic despite his size and can move swiftly when protecting our farm.
Do Great Pyrenees Shed?
The answer to this question is yes. Yes, they do. Because Great Pyrenees have such long hair, depending on your climate, they will definitely shed most when it starts to heat up for summer. While it’s a lot of hair to deal with, we have the perfect DIY Dog Wash to make sure we can keep up. Our Great Pyrenees, Archer, needs ALL of the detangler when he’s getting a bath. We also make sure to trim his hair in the back if it gets too long and matted. We also have to make sure to brush his coat regularly to keep it soft and try to keep the shedding down.
This all may seem like a lot of work but, with our tips, we hope you can streamline your de-shedding routine. It’s definitely worth it to get those sweet Great Pyrenees cuddles and kisses without drowning in hair! Check out the links below for our favorite products!
Our boy, Archer, is a protector through and through. In fact, rather than relaxing inside, he prefers to be outside where he knows he can guard the homestead. Great Pyrenees are one of the top livestock guardian dogs and we see every single bit of that in Archer. He protects our baby goats and chickens from coyotes and watches over our girls as well. Great Pyrenees can also be very playful, ours loves swimming and donkeys almost as much as he loves rolling around and getting dirty! Regardless of Archer never staying clean, we love our Great Pyrenees!
These gentle giants are, in our experience, great with babies, kids, and other animals. That is also such a favorable trait with large dogs. Equipped with a mane suited for a lion, and a powerful bark, Archer truly is the protector of our farm and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Do you have a Great Pyrenees that you love? We would love to see! Drop your pics in the comments, friends!

Christina & Trevor
