Meet our new farm friend! I kept you all in suspense to meet this new Ram & I want to tell you
why we have him! Read Below!
Hey Friends! Its that time of year getting ready for breeding season! We brought a new RAM to the farm. The type of breed he is a Katahdin x Dorper cross. I have been looking for some time for the specific look and coloring for our homestead. You know that I love my stopped animals and we were not planning on bringing him home. But he was perfect and he is here! We do not have a name for him yet we need some suggestions!
Any thoughts for his name? We usually love country music artists for our farmfriends!
The Katahdin x Dorper cross is usually for exceptional market lambs and for replacement breeding stock. The cross breeding results in the best of both breeds. Crossbred individuals tend to be more vigorous and have a more specific look!
Let breakdown WHY we chose Katahdin & Dorper Sheep:
Low Maintenance
No shearing – my favorite part
No tail docking
Parasite resistance
Low maintenance
Non selective grazers – Even though they do love their grassy alfalfa!
Exceptional Mothering
Lamb easily -they really do!
Lambs born vigorous & alert – It’s amazing to see them walk in minutes!
Strong protective mothering instincts
Rejection rare
I love sharing with you all that we have learned on the homestead and I hope to pass on the knowledge down of what our trials and tribulations have been. We first had Barbados Sheep that did not fit our homestead. We now love the types of sheep we have here and are so thankful for a great bunch of mamas.
Hugs,
Christina & Trevor
Ps – I could not resist sharing these pictures of Frankie & the lambs from the spring time. I mean what is cuter Frankie or the lambs?!
